STUDY AIMS

To develop reliable prediction equations for lung function measurements in pre-school children together with an evidence base for future standard operating procedures in this age group. This will be achieved by:
  1. Collating and validating lung function data from healthy young children (3-7y)
  2. Investigating the major determinants of selected lung function parameters during early life and the extent to which these are influenced by technical factors
  3. Using appropriate statistical methodology to model the data and develop prediction equations that allow data to be expressed as both Z-scores and centiles
  4. Disseminating the study outcomes widely and implementing appropriate prediction equations within commercially available lung function equipment
  5. Promoting international use of these prediction equations.

STUDY DESIGN

This multi-centre collaborative study design incorporates cross-sectional analysis of retrospectively and prospectively collected lung function data. The Asthma UK reference equations will facilitate both clinical management and basic research of children with asthma and other respiratory diseases
